Mechanism of Action

Ondansetron is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that works by:

  • Blocking 5-HT3 receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ)
  • Inhibiting serotonin binding to vagal afferents in the gastrointestinal tract
  • Preventing activation of the vomiting reflex
  • Reducing nausea signals to the vomiting center in the brain

Administration: Can be taken with or without food. Shake well before use.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to ondansetron or any component
  • Concomitant use with apomorphine
  • Congenital long QT syndrome

Warnings & Precautions

  • QT Prolongation: Use with caution in patients with cardiac conditions
  • Serotonin Syndrome: Risk when used with other serotonergic drugs
  • Hepatic Impairment: Dose adjustment may be required
  • Pregnancy: Category B - use only if clearly needed
  • Breastfeeding: Excreted in breast milk - use with caution
