Mechanism of Action

Ondansetron is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that works by:

Blocking 5-HT3 receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ)
Inhibiting serotonin binding to vagal afferents in the gastrointestinal tract
Preventing activation of the vomiting reflex
Reducing nausea signals to the vomiting center in the brain

Dosage & Administration

Administration: Can be taken with or without food. Shake well before use.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to ondansetron or any component
Concomitant use with apomorphine
Congenital long QT syndrome

QT Prolongation: Use with caution in patients with cardiac conditions
Serotonin Syndrome: Risk when used with other serotonergic drugs
Hepatic Impairment: Dose adjustment may be required
